Tarnetar
The
most colourful and vibrant fair of Gujarat is the Tarnetar
Fair held annually at Tarnetar in Sauashtra for three days
in September.
Matchmaking
:
The special feature of the is matchmaking
between 0 f Kolis, Bharwads and Rabaris. It is believed that
the svayamvar of the Panchal princess Draupadi was held here
wherein Arjuna won her hand. Even today, the tradition of
svayamvar continues and the tribal girls attending the fair
have a right to choose their husbands from the assembled
youth. The youth come attired in exquisite clothes and jewellery
with ornate umbrellas, which signifies that they are ready
for a matrimonail alliance.
Celebration
:
The traditional Garba, Hudo dance and
tamasha are the favourites. Bhajan mandalis sing devotional
songs to the tune of flok instruments such as khartals, pakhawaj,
dhol and tabla. Cattle shows, exhibitions ofr embroidery,
sports events and food stalls add zest to the already charged
atmosphere.

Chhatri:
The beautifully embroidered and mirrored
umbrellas have become an emblem of the fair.
